According to permitting documents filed with the city's permitting office on Wednesday, five high-traffic intersections within the city of Asheville will soon have Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras installed courtesy of the Asheville Police Department and Flock Safety, an Atlanta based security and surveillance company.
Two cameras will be installed in the immediate proximity of the Pisgah View Apartments. The first camera will be attached to a utility pole facing the intersection of Short Michigan Avenue and Amboy Road.

This camera is expected to read sixteen thousand plates per day of vehicles exiting off I-240 onto Amboy Road. The second camera will be installed on a pole next to China Taste at the intersection of Hanover and State Street.

This camera is expected to read five thousand plates and will overwhelmingly monitor individuals leaving the Pisgah View Apartments.
The third camera will be placed at the roundabout connecting Lyman Street, Depot Street, and the Clingman Avenue Extension in the River Arts District. Directly in proximity to the Wyre, a new mixed use development complex, this camera is expected to monitor up to eleven thousand plates.

An additional camera will be placed off S French Broad Avenue, facing north in the immediate proximity of Aston Park and the several public housing complexes in the vicinity. This camera will read up to ten thousand plates.

The fifth camera will be installed at the corner of London and West Chapel Road, monitoring up to three thousand vehicles travelling southbound on London Road.

As of the time of publication, Permit 24-01004 is in the initial processing stages. Ahead of the Build is pending a response from the City of Asheville regarding the expected cost and timeframe of this project.
